We have identified the following key environmental aspects that contribute to our carbon footprint:

  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Domestic and healthcare waste
  • Anaesthetic agents
  • Procurement

The introduction of our environmental policy is a commitment of Focus Referrals management and shared responsibility with our associates. Charlotte Wynn is the sustainability champion and with the aid of the Focus Green Team has responsibility for the implementation of this policy.

What are some of the ways we are achieving this at Focus Referrals?

Energy

At Focus we are a fully electric building. We have 2 EV charging stations available in our car park. Automatic internal lights in high traffic areas and outside lights controlled by timers reduce our energy consumption, alongside a practice switch off policy for lights, computers and air conditioning units. We also have an outside drying space for our washing during the sunnier months.

Waste production and disposal

We are constantly evaluating and auditing how we dispose of our different waste categories. Our overall goal is to generate as little waste as possible but when generated, we recycle as much as possible.

Here are just some of the other areas Focus Referrals are reducing their waste: -

  • Changing our waste disposal providers in July 2025. This means all our general and clinical waste is now redirected from landfill to produce energy from waste.
  • Theatre and pet food soft plastics recycling programs initiated in December 2025.
  • Medication audits to reduce wastage.
  • Reusable surgical gowns, hats and masks to minimise our waste generated from surgical procedures. These have been updated in October 2025 to NHS standard Revolution Zero fabrics which are part of a fully traceable circular economy. In 2023 we purchased 470 single use surgical gowns. As of October 2025, we are now 100% reusable, producing zero waste in these streams.

Procurement

Through careful stock management we have reduced our specialist ophthalmic deliveries from weekly to monthly, with our primary wholesaler only delivering once weekly. We work with suppliers to source the most sustainable products available. E.g. buster collars made from recycled plastic, pet impact poo bags, recyclable paper towels to name a small selection.

Anaesthesia

Anaesthetic F gases are one of the most potent atmospheric polluters with high global warming potentials. At Focus Referrals this equates to 15% of our total carbon footprint. We adopt low flow anaesthetic techniques to reduce our usage and have delivered CPD training on this to the local veterinary community in October 2025. In July 2025 we installed 4 Sage tech docks which capture our anaesthetic gas waste, preventing its release into the atmosphere, reducing our scope 1 footprint to 0. The long-term goal of this technology will mean this vapour can extracted and re used.

Biodiversity

In addition to our bee friendly planters in our car park, Focus created the ‘Secret Garden’ in summer 2025, filled with pollinator friendly plants, a bird bath, feeders and bug house to help support wildlife on our industrial estate.

  • So pleased with the expertise and gentleness

Took my guniea pig, Ozzy after referral from my regular vet. So pleased with the expertise and gentleness of the vet I saw (Cat), they are worth the money and I felt like Ozzy was in good hands.

She pressure tested, dye tested both eyes and took a biopsy. Don't have the all clear yet, but feeling less anxious about the outcome. Would absolutely recommend using them.

  • The team at Focus Referrals were fantastic!

Helen and the rest of the team at Focus Referrals were fantastic. The team showed kindness and understanding and we were provided clear advice at all times throughout the process.

Minerva's recovery has been fantastic to see - she has gone from a sad and confused kitty back to her usual meowsy self in less than two weeks, and since then the improvements have been incredible. Thank you!

  • I would highly recommend Focus Referrals

We (my cat and I) had a great experience. The place was clean and tidy, the staff that we met were very friendly and helpful. The visit was pleasant for my cat. The vet was very good with him. She treated him gently, even trying to let him come out of the cage on his own.

Even though he didn't want to come out of his safe space, the vet was gentle in getting him out of the cage. The tests were carried out with a calming experience. I was really pleased with the professionalism of the vet and the entire experience. I would highly recommend Focus Referrals if your pet needs treatment here.

  • 5 stars all round...

Having been referred by our local vets to Focus due to prolonged healing issues following eye removal surgery on our beloved little old lady cat, Jessie, it was obvious from the minute we met the amazing Focus team, that we were in the best hands.

Helen (ably assisted by a very experienced and kind nurse) was so thorough in her examination, explaining risks and benefits of further surgery and identifying new issues which would need to be addressed. Jessie came through her op with flying colours. Amazingly neat and beautiful wound stitching which has been admired by Jessie's many post op visitors. We were given a comprehensive explanation of both the post-op meds regime, tests results and recommendations for our local vets to improve other aspects of our cat's health.

I cannot thank Focus Referrals enough. They really are the gold standard in technical and compassionate care.

  • We have received first class service and attention!

We can't thank the staff at Focus Referrals enough for what they have done for our Dexter, especially James. Dexter, has had his cataracts removed in both eyes, due to diabetes, and from our very first visit, we have received first class service and attention.

Since surgery, Dexter is making great progress and has been given a new lease of life, with his confidence growing. I would highly recommend this practice. Thank you all at focus referrals for your kind and continued support, for Dexter and us.

  • Empathy and professionalism

Helen saved my cats eye. He had a corneal ulcer and our vets referred us as they feared he may end up needing eye removal. Helen was able to treat his eye medically and he has made a full recovery with both eyes and able to see perfectly fine.

Throughout the process, we were treated with empathy and professionalism. My cat was understandably nervous, and Helen and the lovely nurse assisting her handled him so well, they were fully prepared with Feliway plugged in, dreamies on hand, and a litter tray.

They were a breath of fresh air during a stressful time and I'm forever grateful for them saving my boys eye.

  • From the very beginning, the team has gone above and beyond

I just wanted to take a moment to say how incredibly grateful we are for the outstanding care and support Focus Referrals have provided for Teddy. From the very beginning, the team has gone above and beyond to ensure his needs are met with compassion, professionalism, and genuine kindness.

Their communication has been excellent, always keeping us informed and involved, and their dedication to Teddy’s wellbeing has been nothing short of amazing. It’s been such a comfort knowing he’s in such capable and caring hands.

Thank you for everything you’ve done – we truly couldn’t have asked for better.

  • We couldn’t have been happier with the service

We were referred to Focus Referrals by our local vet after our dog sustained a serious eye injury. It was touch and go if the eye could be saved. We couldn’t have been happier with the service. Mark Russon and the brilliant team of nurses were upfront and honest about the prospects of treatment being successful. They put us at ease on every occasion and handled our sometimes feisty pug with professionalism and a touch of humour.

We left feeling well-informed and confident in the excellent and highly specialised care our dog received, which was also great value for money. The reception staff were lovely and welcoming and absolutely on it with insurance claims. Throughout our several visits, we experienced a consistent level of care and professionalism. We would not hesitate in recommending this clinic.
